Check who can authorise the work. Use the actual landlord, utility, council or direct emergency route where appropriate. This enquiry form is not an emergency dispatch service. Local reporting contacts are below; this enquiry service does not provide emergency dispatch.
Start with the symptom and affected fitting
Quick answer
A dripping tap, slow-filling toilet and concealed leak need different investigations. Describe what is happening, where and when, including whether the problem affects one fitting or several. A repair enquiry does not need a guessed part number. The plumber can assess the actual arrangement and explain the proposed remedy. If water is escaping uncontrollably or there is immediate danger, use direct appropriate help rather than wait for an email response. Routine repair planning begins once the situation is safe.
Diagnosis, parts and the complete repair
Agree whether the first visit is assessment, a repair attempt or a quoted installation. A symptom does not prove that one named part has failed. Access and compatibility can affect the available remedy, especially where a fitting is concealed or discontinued. Ask whether parts must be ordered and how further cost is approved. A temporary measure should be described as temporary. Keep diagnosis and complete repair separate so a call-out payment is not mistaken for a guaranteed finished job.

Plumbing, electrical and gas work
The name plumber does not establish competence for every related service. WaterSafe lists relevant plumbing approval categories; electrical and gas work need their own suitable competence. Check the actual scope and who performs each part. HSE advises checking Gas Safe registration and relevant qualifications for gas work. A radiator pipe repair, boiler appliance fault and electric shower connection can require different work. We have not selected providers or verified their registrations; suitability is assessed before any proposed connection.

A private repair or a utility asset?
Describe whether the issue affects a fitting, internal pipe, outside supply or waste route. Responsibility depends on the actual asset and arrangements, not just which side of a wall the symptom appears. Ofwat distinguishes mains, communication pipes and supply pipes, with shared or particular arrangements needing further checks.
For a Bury address, use Anglian Water’s supply or sewer route where appropriate before privately commissioning work on its assets. A plumber’s quote should state what is being investigated and repaired, access and reinstatement, and any utility liaison. A visible cover, shared-looking pipe or our form cannot establish ownership, consent or who pays a repair charge.

Access and making good
Tell the business about cupboards, panels, floors and decorative finishes that may need access. Agree who authorises opening them and what reinstatement is included. A repair to a joint does not automatically include replacing tiles, plaster or joinery. Protecting retained surfaces and removing waste should be discussed before work. For rented or shared buildings, establish the landlord or managing agent’s route and approval requirements. Do not arrange alterations on another owner’s behalf without the necessary authority.
Compare complete repair quotations
Ask whether the quote includes…
Ask for assessment/call-out, labour basis, parts, access, isolation/testing, waste, VAT and making good. Identify exclusions and the approval point for extra work. A fixed small-fitting repair and open-ended investigation are different scopes. Ask what result and warranty terms are offered, with any retained limitations clear. If a replacement is recommended, compare the complete installed proposal with a reasoned repair option rather than simply the retail fitting price.

- Parts, access, testing and making good.
- VAT, exclusions and approval of additional work.
Handover and local help
Ask what was found, what was changed and what checks were completed. Keep invoices and product details for follow-up. If symptoms recur, supply the history rather than begin a disconnected repair. For an enquiry, give postcode, affected fitting and safe symptom description. We review requests and may help connect suitable local businesses; sending details does not book attendance or guarantee a repair can be completed on the first visit.
